Portugal Mandates Qualified Electronic Signature for PDF Invoices from 2024

Starting January 1, 2024, Portugal will require a qualified electronic signature on PDF invoices for them to be considered valid. This marks a shift from the current acceptance of PDF invoices as e-invoices. From 2024, companies must use a qualified electronic signature for their PDF or XML invoices to be legally recognized.

A qualified electronic signature is created by a private, accredited entity. It serves to verify the identity of the company issuing a signed document, ensuring authenticity and integrity. This new requirement emphasizes the importance of secure and verified digital transactions in Portugal's business environment.

Businesses must prepare for this change by ensuring they can generate eInvoices with a qualified digital signature, aligning their invoicing processes with the new legal standards in Portugal.
